Anna Munkholm on becoming a mother for the first time
One afternoon at the beginning of autumn, Anna Munkholm is sitting at a table filled with dark pink dahlias. She is pregnant with her first child, a baby girl.
In this edition of Ro Women, Anna shares her own thoughts on becoming a mother for the first time. On slowly becoming someone she has not yet met. And on the sense of calm that perhaps can arise in the midst of something so big and unknown.
The butterflies fluttering around in her stomach
Anna has not yet met her daughter, but in a way, something in her has already recognised the role.
“I have not met my daughter yet, but in a very special way, I already feel that I have become someone’s mother.”
She tells how she recently stood picking gooseberries at her parents’ house and suddenly visualised her daughter standing beside her, with light hair moving in the wind.
“Somehow, these little imaginings make her more real and make the butterflies flutter in my stomach,” she says.
The dreams, the imaginings and everything that is still unknown make the wait something truly special the first time around.
»My dreams are no longer only my own«
There is a clear sense of joy in Anna’s words when she talks about becoming a mother for the first time, but also a sense of reflection. The kind that comes with standing in the midst of a great change. For Anna, the pregnancy is not only about the new human being who is on the way. It is also about who she is slowly becoming along the way.
“At the same time, I can feel how something in me is slowly shifting. My dreams, my priorities and the way I see the future are no longer only my own,” she says.
She shares her body with her daughter “for a little while”, as she puts it herself, and knows that she will soon have to get to know a new version of herself.
“Because there is something vulnerable about becoming a mother. While a new version of me is taking shape, I am slowly saying goodbye to the version of myself I have known all my life.”
It is a kind of honesty that deserves a place in the conversation about becoming a mother for the first time. That it is not only about everything new, but also about a kind of farewell.
A reminder to hold on to herself
In the midst of everything new, Anna feels a need to hold on to what is already hers: her values, her sense of calm and the feeling of being herself.
Around her neck, she wears a small reminder of exactly that. In the clasp of her necklace sits the Ro Signature Diamond. An almost invisible detail, not created to be seen by others, but to have meaning for the person wearing it.
“For me, it can become a small daily reminder to find my inner calm and hold on to myself and my values in the midst of this new chapter as a first-time mother.”

»I am looking forward to meeting her«
Anna does not yet know who she will become as a mother. Perhaps that is precisely the point: Calm doesn´t have to mean having everything figured out, but being able to stand in the unknown without losing yourself.
“I do not yet know what kind of mother I will become. But I am looking forward to meeting her. Both my daughter and the new version of myself.”
Thank you to Anna for sharing her vulnerable and honest thoughts with us while she herself is in the midst of change.
